Five teachers

Who teaches what, and when

  • Davina Bagwell, director and choir conductor, seated in the studio with a viola across her knee

    Davina Bagwell

Director · Gospel choir and adult voices · Mon, Tue, Wed, Sat

Davina started Refrain so that the people who sing in East Point's churches could learn how a voice works, and so that their children could sing beside them. She conducts the gospel choir on Tuesday nights, teaches adults on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, and begins every lesson with a few easy breaths before anyone sings a note. She plays the viola at the holiday concert.

  • Noreen Clyburn, choir accompanist and voice coach, smiling at the upright piano

    Noreen Clyburn

Piano for both choirs, and church musicians · Wed, Sat

Noreen has played the piano for choirs for as long as she has taught, and she plays for both Refrain choirs. On Wednesday evenings she works with church musicians and choir leaders on warm-ups, parts and running a rehearsal, and on the first Saturday of the month she runs the church musicians' workshop.

  • Lewis Fannin, youth choir director, at the grand piano in the rehearsal hall

    Lewis Fannin

Youth choir and teen voices · Mon, Thu, Fri

Lewis conducts the youth choir on Thursday afternoons and teaches teens one to one on Monday, Thursday and Friday. He teaches a part a line at a time, hums it first, and keeps the youth choir's rehearsal moving so that nobody stands still for long.

  • Nanami Omori, voice teacher for children, seated in the studio with her cello

    Nanami Omori

Children's voices · Mon, Wed, Thu, Sat

Nanami teaches children from nine to twelve on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Her lessons are built from songs the child already knows, a little rhythm with a hand drum and a plan for the week that fits on one line. She plays the cello at the holiday concert.

  • Issam Touma, sight-singing and voice teacher, seated in the studio with an oud

    Issam Touma

Sight-singing and adult voices · Tue, Fri, Sat

Issam teaches the sight-singing class on Tuesday evening and adult voices on Friday and Saturday. He grew up singing in a choir and plays the oud at the holiday concert. His class is for students who never learned to read music, and begins with finding the first note of a line.
